The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes examines the origins of Panem’s Hunger Games through the focused lens of young Coriolanus Snow, mentor to District 12’s tribute Lucy Gray Baird. This prequel narrative explores how idealism can curdle into power-seeking, how systemic control is justified, and how personal choices echo across decades. By revisiting the era just before the events that define The Hunger Games series, the story clarifies the mechanics of the Games, the politics of the Capitol, and the moral compromises demanded by survival in a manufactured hierarchy.
